The MOMENT project is gaining international reach in the scientific world! Prof. Dr. Torsten Sachs of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam was invited to present our project at the EGU General Assembly 2024 in a 20-minute presentation to an international audience of experts!
The annual EGU General Assembly was a hybrid event in Vienna which took place from April 14th to 19th 2024. Prof. Dr. Torsten Sachs was connected online to present MOMENT project goals and preliminary results to an interested international audience of experts on behalf of the entire MOMENT team. Additionally, more detailed insights into individual sub-projects were given in further presentations during the annual conference.
In her presentation, Dr. Luana Basso from the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena showed estimates of methane fluxes in the northern latitudes (north of 60°N) over the last decade (2010-2021). For the estimates, she used global atmospheric inverse models as well as atmospheric measurement data from regional networks. "We found a clear seasonal pattern with methane emission peaks in July and August. We also found that models estimate Arctic methane fluxes more accurately when regional data is assimilated instead of global data from background surface stations. This underlines the importance of using regional data in our models to better estimate the methane budget in the Arctic regions," summarized Dr. Basso.
Prof. Dr. Victor Brovkin from the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology held an "expert hour" at an information stand hosted by the CLICCS Cluster of Excellence, answering questions and discussing the various Arctic research projects in Hamburg, including the MOMENT and CLICCS projects, with interested scientists.
