The 6th European Conference on Permafrost (EUCOP) was held in Puigcerdà, Spain from June 18-22, 2023. More than 440 permafrost experts from different disciplines met there to present and discuss their current research questions and results. Among them were also MOMENT researchers e.g. Julia Boike, Simone Stünzi and Jannika Gottuk from Alfred-Wegener-Institut in Potsdam.
Jannika Gottuk presented her ongoing master thesis under supervision of Simone M. Stuenzi and Julia Boike in the form of a scientific poster. Jannika Gottuk's master thesis focuses on the spatial and temporal variability of the albedo of snow-free land surfaces on Disko Island, Greenland. For the comparison between Landsat 8 and Sentinel 2 satellite data, she can also draw back on field data collected during the preparatory expedition for Project MOMENT in August and September 2022. Albedo depends on various surface properties, influences the energy budget of permafrost soils, and is an important parameter in climate modeling. Interest in her poster was particularly shown by modelers using ready-made albedo products and scientists also doing research on Disko Island, but in other projects. There was a valuable exchange about the challenges of albedo derivation and field work on Disko Island.
